The Heritage

How Peltor went from simple headsets to shooting ear protection

Peltor pioneered hearing protection for industrial workers exposed to loud noise — starting with a single headset built to shield ears from factory din. Through the 1960s and 70s it kept innovating, raising attenuation performance and becoming a leader in hearing conservation, before joining the 3M Company.

Today the 3M PELTOR brand is known worldwide for electronic earmuffs and communication headsets used across manufacturing, construction, military, aviation and recreational shooting — still headquartered in Värnamo, Sweden, where it all began.

Hearing protection questions, answered

Straight answers to the questions shooters, hunters and pros ask before they pick a protector.

6 questions
Q1Does a higher dB (NRR) rating really protect my hearing better?

Yes — within reason. Hearing damage is cumulative and permanent, and the Noise Reduction Rating (NRR) tells you how many decibels a protector knocks down. A higher NRR buys more margin against loud impulse noise like gunshots. That said, a correct, sealed fit matters as much as the number — a 33 dB plug worn loosely protects less than a well-seated 26 dB one.

Q2How loud is too loud?

Sustained exposure above roughly 85 dB can cause gradual hearing loss. The decibel scale is logarithmic, so every few dB is a large jump in sound energy. A single gunshot runs 140–175 dB, and power tools easily clear safe limits — which is why protection isn't optional at the range or on a loud job site.

Q3What's the difference between electronic and passive protection?

Passive earmuffs and plugs physically block sound by their NRR — simple and rugged. Electronic (Tactical) muffs block the same way, but add microphones that suppress harmful impulse noise in milliseconds while amplifying low-level sounds — so you still hear conversation and commands between shots.

Q4Can I still hear range commands and talk while wearing them?

With electronic protectors, yes. They amplify ambient sound to a safe level and clamp down the instant a shot fires (Clear Voice Tracking and Dynamic Suppression Time on Peltor Sport Tactical models). Passive protection blocks everything equally, so you trade away situational awareness for simplicity.

Q5Earmuffs or earplugs — and can I use both?

Both work; the choice comes down to comfort and fit. For the loudest environments you can "double up" — plugs under muffs (dual protection). The ratings don't simply add together, but combining typically gains you roughly 5+ dB over the higher-rated item alone.

Q6Are Peltor headsets Bluetooth and hardhat compatible?

Many electronic models add Bluetooth® audio and comms, voice-guided menus and rechargeable batteries. Select Peltor headsets attach directly to hard hats, combining head and hearing protection in one. Check each product for its specific feature set.

“I've tried 3 other models, but the Sport Tactical 500 is the best. Comfort is key for my long-range sessions and these deliver — snug for hours, big volume buttons, great Bluetooth. Most importantly they attenuate sound incredibly well. 100% recommend to any shooting enthusiast.”

“After trying numerous options, the Tactical Sport 500 is hands down the best I've used. Solid and durable yet lightweight enough for hours at the range. The circuitry lets me hear range commands clearly while blocking damaging gunshots. My only regret is not buying them sooner.”

“Protecting my hearing on loud job sites is critical. None compare to the 3M PELTOR Tactical Headset. It blocks jackhammers and power saws, while the built-in mics let me hear my crew. The hardhat attachment is a game changer — head and hearing protection in one.”
